Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
Just as children often mimic their parents’ behavior, we should follow God’s perfect example, which is shown to us in the person of Jesus Christ.
We’ve all seen it happen, either with our own children or someone else’s. Whatever a parent does or says, so does the child. Dad takes a forkful of vegetables at dinner, his daughter eats some of hers. Mom sweeps the floor and her son uses his pint-size broom to imitate her chores. There are countless studies that tell us how we can impact our children, just by the lifestyle we model.
In his letter to the Ephesians, Paul encourages us to follow that natural child-like behavior and imitate our Heavenly Father. Since God’s character is love, he’s directing us to also live a life of love. Christ is God’s ultimate example of His love — sacrificing His only Son to save us from our sins. Jesus gave Himself freely as that sacrifice. Paul prompts us to offer ourselves in that same way — to walk in this world, showing God’s love to each other.
What are some ways you can offer a loving sacrifice, as a child of God? Are you willing to set aside your own desires to serve a friend or family member? How else can you show that you’re following God’s example of love to the world?
Lord God, You have given me the greatest example of love possible — Your Son Jesus Christ, who paid the price for my sins. Help me to be Your child, loving You and others with a willing, sacrificial love. Show me how I can model Your love in the world. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
