Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace.
We have been united through the work of the Holy Spirit and we should continue this unity, living peaceably with each other.
As I’ve read through the Scriptures in this month’s devotions, I have been struck by the wide variety of people the writers of the verses have addressed. Jews, Gentiles, noblemen, common people, women, men — all kinds of people from all walks of life, with all kinds of opinions and ways of living. And yet, we are all considered brothers and sisters in God, part of the single body of Christ. How is it possible to for us to be one family and truly love so many varied people?
It is only through the Holy Spirit that we can possibly do so. As the Spirit does His work, helping us to become more like Christ, then we can live in peace with people we don’t even know. But here Paul reminds us that, while it is by the Spirit we were united, we have to make some effort to stay in unity. Our effort must come in the form of continuing to be open to the Spirit, allowing Him to do His work in us. We can never forget that it is God in us that allows peaceful hearts and relationships. We can’t maintain them if we try to rely only on our own strength.
If we want to stay close to the Holy Spirit, we need to know all we can about God. Have you built the habit of reading Scripture regularly? Do you “pray without ceasing” as Paul instructs us in 1 Thessalonians?
Lord, You have given us Your Holy Spirit, to comfort and support us. May I always remember that, through Your Spirit, I can do all things. Help me to open my heart and mind to Your Spirit, so that I can live in love and peace with all the members of Your church. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
