A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.
People will know that we are followers of Christ because of our love for each other.
In these verses, Jesus is talking to His disciples with His crucifixion looming in the near future. He is preparing them for the time it will be their responsibility to speak for Christ to the world. And how will the disciples be able to prove they are Christ’s true representatives? By the love they show to one another.
If we can’t love our brothers and sisters in Christ, how can we expect unbelievers to be drawn to God? We can’t just tell people about how much God loves them. If they don’t see us loving each other, there aren’t enough words to convince them of the truth of what we’re saying. Love for our fellow believers is our credential as God’s ambassadors to the world.
Do your actions match the words of love Jesus has spoken? Can people who are far from God see His love through you?
My Lord, You have given us the command to love one another, as You loved us. Please help me to show that love for my fellow believers. May those who do not know You be able to see Your love through my actions. Help me to be your ambassador in all that I do. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
